Real companies do not lock your screen, call you out of the blue, or ask for gift cards. Do this now:
- Do not call the number on the screen. Do not click any links.
- Do not let anyone connect to your computer. Do not give passwords or payment.
- If the screen is stuck, hold the power button until the computer turns off. Then turn it back on.
- Call me. I will check the computer and make sure it is clean.
You already let them in or paid: first call your bank using the number on the back of your card. Then call me. Leave the computer off until I look at it.

What I tell my customers, in plain words. Share them with a friend.
- Microsoft won't call you.Microsoft, Apple and Amazon do not call about a virus on your computer. If they do, hang up.
- No gift cards. Ever.No real company asks for gift cards, wire transfers or Bitcoin to fix a computer.
- Don't click surprise links.An email or text says your account has a problem? Don't click. Open the website or call the number you already trust.
- Say yes to updates.When your computer or phone asks to update, let it. Updates close security holes.
- Keep a second copy of your photos.Back up your pictures and files somewhere other than the computer itself.
- One password per account.Use a different password for email and for banking. A password manager makes this easy.

- A small box on your home network that keeps a second copy of your photos and files.
- Wi-Fi
- The wireless signal that connects your computer, phone and printer to the internet in your home.
- Malware
- Bad software that sneaks onto a computer. It can show fake warnings, slow things down or steal information.
- Antivirus
- A program that watches for malware and removes it.
- Backup
- A second copy of your files kept somewhere else, so nothing is lost if the computer fails.
- Windows 11
- The current version of Microsoft Windows, the system that runs most PC computers.
- Remote support
- Help over the internet. With your permission I see your screen and fix things while you watch.
